  • My Positionality Statement

I’m a woman and designer, shaped by growing up in the rich, multicultural city of Manchester. Being raised by a single mum, my upbringing taught me independence, resilience, and curiosity. I’ve always been drawn to noticing beauty in the everyday — from colour combinations in the street to textures in materials. I think visually and instinctively, with a design brain that’s always collecting inspiration from the world around me.

In my creative practice I like to combine digital and hands-on processes, to create work that explores colour, sustainability, and materiality. I like to create mixed media, non-traditional textile outcomes, such as set design, zines, art installations and CMF storyboarding. I have a natural eye for layout and aesthetics — I love making things look good and feel balanced. I’m drawn to objects, spaces, and visuals that please me, and I often express myself through my surroundings and personal style.

I often question what it means to be a responsible designer in a world already full of things and this can cause me to feel overwhelmed sometimes, but this drives me to create with intention. I want my work to bring joy, raise awareness, and reflect care.

    w/c 13th October

This week I was with O’dells studios Monday and Friday and Orto on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Monday was a busy day , with fittings for an actor in the morning- lots of running back and forth to Camberwell to  the tailors. I also helped  shoot content of the Toast x Solovair shoe collab for Tom. I really enjoyed this as I got to do visual research and have more of a say in the direction of the shoot. I was really please with how the photos turned out- I plan to carry out more projects like this.

At Orto this week there was another assistant in the studio on Tuesday- this made me feel more comfortable so I think I’ve learned I prefer to be in a work environment where there is a team rather than just me and 1 other person- maybe I need to find my next placement in a larger team. Tuesday was more of a prep day where I took fabric to the launderette and ironed lots and lots of fabric. Then on Wednesday , we printed more large tablecloth and I helped coat a fabric in a new eco coating that is being g trialled for a waterproof coating. It was interesting to learn about this and it was a new technique that I wouldn’t necessarily would have expected to be doing before I started at a print studio.

Thursday I had a really nice day off! This was very needed.

On Friday I had an early start with Tom at content filming day at a film studio for a big Netflix series. This is what the fitting on monday was for. It was super exciting being on set in a large production studios, this is the first time I’ve been on a set like that. I really enjoyed the shoot day energy.

I have had a very busy week, with all this and working at my part time job. In the upcoming week I would like to continue emailing to try to set up my next placement. I’d also like to try to find time to relax.

    Beginning my DPS Year

This week was an exciting week. This week I interned at O’Dell’s Studios and I began my 2nd placement at Orto Print Studio.

On Monday , I assisted on a shoot at O’Dell’s for the shoe brand RM Williams. Tom was the model and there was a separate production team that came in and I was sort of doing the odd assisting jobs. It was fun as we shot in Covent Garden and in various locations in Camberwell. However, with Tom being the talent and another director coming in, I was at a bit of a loss as to how to help out- I find it difficult to not constantly be doing something when I’m at work so was hard  to step back and just watch and learn. I felt a bit like I was useless However at the end of the day, I was thanked for my hard work so I mustn’t have been. It was interesting talking to the director about his career as he started of as a stylist and then moved over to art direction and production, I’ve learnt that on shoots you have to make an effort  talk to everyone as its all a networking opportunity.

I was meant to start at Orto on Tuesday however my boss called in sick on my first day. It’s important to prioritise your health however this was quite demotivating. Therefore I spent my unexpected day off researching for future opportunities as ideally id like to start a different placement in January. My first day at Orto was exciting. It’s at the blue garage which is a really cool co-working space, was fun to be in a building with lots of other creatives and the  resources there seem really good. I got stuck right in with mixing inks and then we began printing with a large screen onto tablecloths. I felt very nervous to start. I find it a bit stressful when I don’t know everything straight away and get things wrong- I know that it is part of being an intern and have to accept that I won’t always be good at everything first try.

Overall, a busy and productive first week!
